The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim came out late last year to great fanfare from critics and gamers alike, but developer Bethesda has refused to rest on its laurels.

Words like "epic" and "immense" have been bandied around along with a host of superlatives as Skyrim has captured gamers' imagination, leading the way on online game streaming site Steam.

As one may expect with a game as big as this one, there have been bugs and glitches, as well as cases of lag that have bothered a small number of players.

Bethesda, to its credit, has been proactive about fixing all these problems.

Game director Todd Howard has now revealed the scale of the update process his firm has taken on, telling Game Informer: "We already have more updates out for this than Fallout 3 and Oblivion in their lifetime. So we're really committed to fixing everything."

Commenting on the lag issue, he added: "The percentage of people that have a problem on any particular system ends up a low percentage, but the raw number ends up being larger than we would have expected."

Mr Howard expects that the number of people affected will be much lower after the 1.4 update was rolled out. While the "vast majority" will have been unaffected, he says those that did experience the lagging problem have every right to feel aggrieved.

"When you put all this time into something and someone can't play it, you feel terrible," he said.

In addition to the bug fixes, the 1.4 update also includes background support for the soon-to-be-released Skyrim Workshop.

When launched, this will provide a platform for players to access a range of modifications that have been designed for the game by other users.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801298773-ADNFCR
